Google has opened a new round of its student AI subscription giveaway, and for university students in Kenya, the headline offer this time is a free 12-month subscription to Google AI Plus rather than the AI Pro tier that was handed out for free last year. The offer, detailed on Google's Gemini student hub at gemini.google/students and announced through Google's official blog, is open to new and returning students and requires identity verification through SheerID before activation. Registration is open until December 31, 2026.The plan includes 2x higher usage limits in the Gemini app, 400GB of Google One cloud storage, access to Gemini Omni, and unlimited uploads for Study Notebooks, Visuals, and Gemini Live, according to the Kenya-specific version of the student offer page. Students must be enrolled at a higher education institution and are generally expected to fall within the 18 to 24 age bracket, though the page notes that both first-time claimants and students whose 2025 AI Pro trial has since expired can qualify.<ad-spot></ad-spot>Crucially, the free period is not indefinite. The offer terms on Google's Kenya student page state plainly that a valid payment method is required at sign-up, and that unless a subscriber cancels before the trial ends, Google AI Plus will automatically begin charging KES 900 per month once the 12 months lapse. Students who do not intend to keep the subscription will need to cancel ahead of their renewal date to avoid the charge.
Why This Looks Like A Downgrade From Last Year, And Why It Probably Is Not
Kenyan students who benefited from Google's 2025 education push may notice the shift immediately. Between October 7 and December 9, 2025, Google ran a free student offer across six African countries, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe, that gave eligible university students a full year of Google AI Pro at no cost. The rollout was formally unveiled in Nairobi on November 12, 2025, where Benson Kinoti, Google's Education Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the company was proud to extend its most advanced AI tools to Kenyan students free of charge for twelve months. ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo also spoke at the event, tying the initiative to the government's Kenya AI Strategy 2025 to 2030.That 2025 offer included expanded access to Gemini 2.5 Pro, 2TB of Google Drive storage, and a certification course through Gemini Academy aimed at both students and lecturers.<ad-spot></ad-spot>The difference this year comes down to how Google has restructured its consumer AI lineup. At the time of the 2025 African rollout, Google's paid Gemini subscriptions were split into just two tiers, AI Pro and AI Ultra. Since then, Google has introduced a third, cheaper tier, AI Plus, sitting below Pro. With three tiers now in place, AI Plus has effectively become the default offering that Google is directing most international student sign-ups toward, while AI Pro remains the free option specifically reserved for eligible college students inside the United States. That distinction is explicit in Google's own announcement of the 2026 offer. For eligible college students in the US, the free plan is Google AI Pro, which normally costs $19.99 a month and includes 4x higher usage limits, Gemini Spark, and 5TB of storage. For eligible college students outside the US, including those in Kenya, the free plan is Google AI Plus, which Google describes as offering Gemini Omni, 2x higher Gemini usage limits, and 400GB of storage.Whether this constitutes a downgrade depends on how it is measured. In absolute terms, AI Plus offers a smaller Gemini usage allowance and roughly a tenth of the storage that AI Pro students in the US are getting. Set against what Kenyan students received in 2025, when AI Pro was the only premium tier Google offered besides Ultra, the 2026 Plus offer will read as a step down for anyone comparing usage caps and storage limits directly. At the same time, AI Plus is still a meaningfully upgraded product relative to the free version of Gemini, and it remains free for the full 12 months. The shift also reflects a practical reality: with tens of millions of students worldwide now eligible for one Google AI plan or another, distributing the lighter Plus tier to the bulk of international student sign-ups, while reserving the heavier Pro tier for a single market, reduces the load on Google's infrastructure at a scale that would be difficult to sustain if every eligible student defaulted to the top consumer tier.
A YouTube Bundle Sweetens The Deal For Students Willing To Pay
Alongside the free Plus offer, Google is also promoting a discounted bundle at one.google.com/ai-student that pairs Google AI Pro with a YouTube subscription for verified students, valid for up to four consecutive years with annual SheerID re-verification, according to Google's official terms published on its YouTube blog. Globally, Google frames this bundle as up to 70 percent off the combined cost of both subscriptions. In Kenya specifically, where the standalone Google AI Pro plan is priced at KES 3,700 per month, the bundle that pairs AI Pro with YouTube Premium Lite is being offered to verified students at KES 900 per month, a discount of roughly 75 percent. A second bundle option that pairs AI Pro with full YouTube Premium, rather than the ad-supported-adjacent Lite tier, is priced at KES 1,130 per month against a combined regular cost of KES 4,199, a discount of about 73 percent. Both figures were observed directly on Google's dynamic student offer page during a visit from Kenya; because the page renders differently depending on the visitor's detected location, pricing shown to other users may vary, and Google's published terms note that these are promotional rates that may automatically revert to standard pricing once a student's eligibility lapses or the four-year window closes.<ad-spot></ad-spot>Google's support documentation on the YouTube Premium Lite bundle adds several operational details relevant to students weighing the offer. The Premium Lite benefit attached to an AI Pro plan only activates once a trial converts into a paid, billed subscription, it cannot be combined with other existing Google One promotions, and it is non-transferable within a family group, meaning only the account holder benefits from ad-free viewing even if the plan is shared. Students who already hold an active YouTube Premium or Premium Lite subscription will not have the bundled benefit activate on top of it.Both the free AI Plus offer and the discounted AI Pro and YouTube bundle require SheerID verification of active student status and a valid, chargeable payment method at the point of registration, a step that has occasionally caused confusion among students who expect a purely free offer not to ask for card details upfront. Google's FAQ on the Kenya student page reiterates that eligibility must be re-verified annually to maintain either arrangement, and that cancellation ahead of the renewal date is the only way to avoid the automatic monthly charge once the free or discounted period ends.

Google Offers Kenyan Students A Free Year of AI Plus, But It Is Not The Same Deal As Last Year

Two months ago, I tested Lyria 3 when it dropped quietly into Gemini on February 18. My conclusion back then was that while the pacing was impressive and the Sheng lyrics were surprisingly authentic, the 30-second cap was the main frustration. It felt like a promising demo that left you wanting more music before it inevitably cut off. It was a "vibe" without a full structure.Google just answered that complaint. Lyria 3 Pro began rolling out on April 11, and the headline upgrade is exactly what the original model needed: tracks up to 3 minutes long instead of 30 seconds. By today, the rollout should reach all users including the free tier, though I have had access since yesterday on Google AI Pro and cannot yet confirm the free tier situation across all regions. The longer format raised a new question. Lyria 3 impressed in short bursts, but could it sustain quality across three full minutes? More importantly, could it actually replicate Kenyan genres like Gengetone or Benga with any authenticity, or would it just be "AI pop" wearing a Kenyan costume?<ad-spot></ad-spot>Before diving in, I should clarify that I am not a music professional, a producer, or even a die-hard music enthusiast. I am a regular tech user who enjoys Kenyan music and wants to see how these tools perform for the average person trying to create something localized.I ran three specific prompts to find out. The results were illuminating, though not always in the way Google would likely want.
How to Access Lyria 3 Pro: It Is Not Obvious
Before we look at the results, a note on access because the current interface is genuinely confusing. Most users will open Gemini and expect a "Music" tab or a model selector. That is not how it works yet.The Gemini app and web interface do not let you explicitly select Lyria 3 Pro from a list. You will not find it listed as a separate model alongside Fast, Thinking, and Pro. Instead, the capability is tied to the specific Gemini reasoning model you are using when you generate the music. From my testing, using the "Fast" model often caps output at 30 seconds regardless of what you ask. Even if you explicitly prompt "create a 3-minute track," you might still get the shorter Lyria 3 behavior. To unlock the full 3-minute potential of Lyria 3 Pro, you must switch to the Thinking model before generating.I also recommend selecting the music creation feature explicitly and stating the duration in your prompt. Without both of these steps, the system seems to default to its "quick clip" mode. This feels like a significant interface gap that Google will likely clean up in future updates, but for now, the "Thinking" model plus an explicit duration prompt is the only reliable path to a full song.
The Three Prompts: Testing the 254 Sound
I chose three genres rooted in specific Kenyan musical traditions to test how well the model understands not just African music broadly, but distinct local styles that have very different rhythmic and cultural identities.Prompt 1 (Gengetone): Create a 3-minute gengetone track with Sheng lyrics, heavy 808s, catchy hooks, and a club vibe inspired by Nairobi street culture.<ad-spot></ad-spot>Prompt 2 (Benga): Generate a 3-minute benga-style song with fast-paced guitar riffs, Luo-inspired rhythms, and storytelling vocals.Prompt 3 (Afro-Fusion/Amapiano): Create a 3-minute Kenyan afro-fusion track blending afrobeat, amapiano log drums, and Swahili vocals with a radio-friendly chorus.Lyria 3 Pro named the tracks itself. Prompt 1 generated Tuko Rada.Prompt 2 generated Bura Mar Kwaro.Prompt 3 generated Tutaonana Asubuhi. The third track even came with visible lyrics in the Gemini interface, which was a helpful addition for verifying the language accuracy.
What Lyria 3 Pro Gets Right: The Technical Foundation
The transition from a 30-second clip to a 3-minute song is not just about length: it is about musical "stamina." In this regard, the Pro model is a massive leap forward. The pacing problem from Lyria 3 is fixed. This was the most notable improvement. In the original 30-second model, lyrics often felt rushed. It was as if the AI was trying to cram an entire story into half a minute, leading to vocals that sounded like they were tripping over the beat. Across all three new tracks, Lyria 3 Pro maintained natural pacing throughout the full duration. Words landed where they should, and the rhythm felt considered rather than mechanical.<ad-spot></ad-spot>It knows how to end a song. One of the most annoying things about early AI music was the abrupt cut-off. You would be mid-chorus and the file would simply end. All three tracks I generated this week had smooth, deliberate fade-outs. In Bura Mar Kwaro, the instruments faded out while the vocals did a final "shout out" style exit, which felt like a real production choice.Language and Phonetics. The Sheng in Tuko Rada and the Swahili in Tutaonana Asubuhi were remarkably accurate. The model understands local slang like "dunda" and "rada" and places them in contextually correct sentences. It does not just translate English to Swahili: it uses the cadence of how people actually speak in Nairobi.
The "Homogeneity" Problem: What Lyria 3 Pro Gets Wrong
Despite the technical polish, I have to be honest about the listening experience. There is a central problem with the model in its current state, and it is significant enough to be the headline finding of this review. All three songs sound like the same song. This was the most disappointing discovery. Despite asking for three genuinely different genres, the output shared a structural DNA that made them feel like variations on a single template.Every track followed this exact pattern:

It opened with a low-pitched, slightly distorted voice over bare beats.

Just before each verse, the vocal would drop out so you heard only the instrumental for two bars or instrumental would drop so you only heard the vocal.

Every chorus featured what sounded like a "group" of voices singing together with heavy repetition (the "call-and-response" pattern).

In Tuko Rada, this sounded like "ng'aa na dunda, (Dunda yetu!)" repeated. In Bura Mar Kwaro and Tutaonana Asubuhi, the same structural device appeared, just in different languages. The drums and bass pattern underneath all three tracks was strikingly consistent. If you muted the vocals, it would be very difficult to tell which song was meant to be Gengetone and which was meant to be Afro-fusion.The "Costume" Effect. This leads to what I call the "costume effect." The model can label its outputs correctly without generating them correctly. If you ask for Gengetone and get generic AI pop with Sheng lyrics, that is not Gengetone: it is just AI music wearing a Gengetone costume.Gengetone has a specific, gritty, "dirty" production style that defines the sound of artists like Ethic or the Boondocks Gang. Tuko Rada was far too clean and "shiny." Similarly, Amapiano is defined by the "log drum," a very specific percussive bass sound. While Tutaonana Asubuhi mentioned amapiano in the prompt, the actual log drum sound was either buried in the mix or replaced by a standard electronic bass.
Technical Deep Dive: Why is it so "Samey"?
As a regular user, it is easy to just say "it sounds the same," but there is a technical reason for this. AI models like Lyria are trained on massive datasets. When you prompt for a niche genre like Kenyan Benga, the model likely has fewer high-quality training examples for that specific style compared to, say, "Global Lo-fi Pop."<ad-spot></ad-spot>When a model lacks sufficient data for a specific sub-genre, it tends to "collapse" toward the mean. It takes the "average" of what it knows about African music and mixes it with the "average" of what it knows about modern pop. This results in a "safe" output that is technically competent (it stays in key and on beat) but lacks the "soul" and specific rhythmic "pocket" that makes Kenyan music unique.Furthermore, the "Thinking" model's role here is interesting. Because the Thinking model is designed for reasoning and logic, it is likely being used to ensure "temporal coherence." This is the AI's ability to remember what it played at the 10-second mark and ensure it matches the 2-minute mark. While this makes the song structurally sound, it might also be making the model too "cautious," leading to the repetitive structures I observed.
Comparison: What Changed From Lyria 3 to Pro?
To help readers visualize the jump, here is a breakdown of the evolution we have seen in just two months:
<colgroup><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"><col style="min-width: 25px;"></colgroup>

Feature

Lyria 3 (Feb 2026)

Lyria 3 Pro (April 2026)

Max Duration

30 seconds

3 minutes (180 seconds)

Pacing

Often rushed/crammed

Natural and rhythmic

Structure

Loop-based

Intro, Verse, Chorus, Outro

Endings

Abrupt cut-offs

Smooth fade-outs

Download Options

MP4

MP4 and high-quality MP3

Watermarking

SynthID (Invisible)

SynthID (Invisible)

Fidelity

24kHz Mono/Stereo

48kHz High-Fidelity Stereo

The Honest Listening Experience
Listening to all three tracks back-to-back was actually a bit draining. Not because the music was "bad" (the audio quality is actually crystal clear), but because the lack of variety became suffocating. Each track did exactly what it was told to do at a surface level, but they were not songs you would play twice voluntarily. They felt like "placeholder music" for a world where we no longer have to wait for a human to compose a jingle. For the average Kenyan user, this is a fun toy. You can make a song for a friend's birthday in minutes, and the Sheng will be good enough to make them laugh. But for anyone hoping to use this for "real" creative work, the limitations are clear. It lacks the "stank" (the intentional rhythmic imperfections) that make local music hit the way it does.
The Ethical Elephant in the Room: SynthID
It is also worth noting that every single track generated by Lyria 3 Pro is watermarked with Google's SynthID. This is an invisible digital signature embedded directly into the audio waves. You cannot hear it, and you cannot remove it by compressing the file or recording it with another device.<ad-spot></ad-spot>For journalists and content moderators, this is a win. It means we can always verify if a "viral song" was actually made by a human or generated by Gemini. For artists, it is a reminder that they do not truly "own" the raw output in the same way they own a melody they hummed into a phone. If you are interested in how this works, check out our previous deep dive on how SynthID was reportedly reverse-engineered by open-source researchers earlier this year.
Where This Leaves the Kenyan Creative Scene
The upgrade to 30 seconds was a gimmick. The upgrade to 3 minutes is a tool.Even with the "sameness" problem, Lyria 3 Pro represents a turning point for digital creators in Kenya. Small businesses that need a background track for a "Social Media Sunday" post now have a way to generate something that sounds vaguely local without paying for stock music libraries that only offer "Generic Corporate Ukulele."However, local producers likely do not have much to fear yet. The "cultural depth" is simply not there. The model can mimic the language, but it cannot yet mimic the "soul" of the 254 sound. It cannot replicate the specific way a Benga guitar lead "weeps" or the specific way a Gengetone producer distorts a kick drum to make it rattle a trunk in a matatu.
Final Verdict: Impressive Science, Underwhelming Art
Lyria 3 Pro is a technical marvel. The fact that I can type a sentence and receive a 48kHz stereo track with coherent verses and a smooth ending in under 60 seconds is mind-blowing. Google has solved the "duration" and "pacing" problems that plagued the early versions. But as a creative tool for Kenyan music, it is still in its "uncanny valley" phase. It is close enough to be recognizable, but far enough to be uncomfortable. It is impressive as a demonstration of what Google's TPUs (Tensor Processing Units) can do, but it is underwhelming as an actual piece of Kenyan culture. If you are a student or a hobbyist, go ahead and play with it. Switch to the Thinking model, give it a detailed prompt, and see what happens. Just don't expect to top the Kenyan charts with it anytime soon. The "Thinking" model can think about the structure of a song, but it still doesn't know how to dance.

We Tested Lyria 3 Pro's 3-Minute AI Music on Kenyan Genres: Here Is the Honest Verdict

"Artists might just be cooked." That was my immediate reaction after testing Google's Lyria 3, the AI music generator that quietly dropped yesterday with zero fanfare. And I'm not even a music enthusiast.
The Surprise Launch
While the tech world was busy watching other AI developments, Google silently released Lyria 3 into the Gemini app on February 18, 2026. No press conference. No countdown. No marketing blitz. Just a sudden appearance that caught everyone off guard, including competing platforms like Suno and Udio.

The feature is currently available to Google AI Pro subscribers (and likely Ultra subscribers) in all countries where Gemini operates, with availability on the free tier still uncertain. Users must be 18+ to access the music generation capabilities.
What Is Lyria 3?
Lyria 3 is Google DeepMind's latest generative music model, now integrated directly into the Gemini app. It transforms text prompts or images into complete 30-second tracks featuring instrumentals, vocals, and original lyrics. Think of it as DALL-E or Midjourney, but for music. The system offers two primary modes:

Text-to-Music: Describe a genre, mood, or concept, and Lyria 3 creates a matching track

Image-to-Music: Upload a photo or video, and the AI generates a soundtrack that fits the visual mood

Each generated track comes with custom cover art created by Nano Banana (Google's AI image generator) and can be downloaded as an MP4 file (a static cover image with audio).<ad-spot></ad-spot>
Hands-On: We Tested It (And We're Impressed)
As a Google AI Pro subscriber, I had immediate access to test the feature. Here's what happened:
Test 1: The Sheng Challenge
Prompt: "Create an upbeat Afrobeat track with Swahili-influenced lyrics about Nairobi's vibrant tech scene and innovation. Include energetic drums and a catchy hook."Result: Lyria 3 generated "Nairobi Innova," a track that not only captured the Afrobeat vibe but delivered lyrics in Sheng (a complex mixture of English and Swahili common in Nairobi). Here's what blew my mind: the word pacing was perfect. Sheng is notoriously difficult to work with because it blends languages mid-sentence, yet the AI matched every word to the beat without stumbling. The energetic drums were there, the hook was catchy, and it genuinely sounded like something you'd hear on Kenyan radio.Verdict: Surprisingly authentic. The cultural and linguistic complexity didn't trip it up.
Test 2: Image-to-Music
Prompt: "Generate music that she is likely to sing" (with an uploaded image of an animated girl with a soft, modern aesthetic)Result: Lyria 3 created "Digital Driftwood," a dreamy Bedroom Pop track with lush synths, gentle rhythms, and intimate vocals. The AI correctly interpreted the visual aesthetic and translated it into a matching musical mood.Verdict: Impressive contextual understanding. The genre choice and production style aligned perfectly with the image's vibe.
Test 3: The Brick Wall
Prompt: A third creative testResult: "Something went wrong with the music generation. Please try again."After two successful generations, I hit a limit. It appears Google has implemented generation caps, likely to manage server load during this beta phase. The exact number of tracks you can generate per day remains unclear, but expect restrictions.
What We Learned

The Good

Audio quality is genuinely impressive: Clear vocals, professional-sounding production

Cultural and linguistic versatility: Handled Sheng without issues

Fast generation: Tracks appear in seconds

SynthID watermarking: All tracks are embedded with Google's imperceptible AI content identifier

Easy sharing: Download as MP4 or share via link

The Limitations

30-second cap: You can't create full-length songs

Generation limits: Unclear daily caps, but they exist

Occasional errors: Not every generation succeeds

No direct artist mimicry: Google has filters to prevent copying existing artists (though you can request "similar style")

Language support: Currently available in English, German, Spanish, French, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese

Technical Details

Available on Gemini web and mobile (rolling out over several days)

Requires 18+ age verification

AI Pro and Ultra subscribers get higher limits

Files download as MP4 (static cover + audio)

Built-in audio verification feature (can check if a track is AI-generated)

<ad-spot></ad-spot>
How Does It Compare?
Lyria 3 enters a competitive market already dominated by two major players:Suno: Currently valued at $2.45 billion, known for fast generation and vocal-focused tracks. Offers longer song lengths and more customization options.Udio: Founded by ex-Spotify AI researchers, emphasizes high-fidelity audio and granular control over musical elements.Lyria 3's Edge: Deep integration with the Gemini ecosystem, SynthID watermarking, and built-in verification tools. The image-to-music feature is also relatively unique in the mainstream AI music space.
What This Means for Kenyan Artists and Producers
The implications are both exciting and concerning:
Opportunities

Rapid prototyping: Musicians can quickly generate demo ideas or experiment with genres

Content creation: YouTubers, TikTokers, and content creators can generate royalty-free background music

Accessibility: Aspiring artists without expensive equipment can create professional-sounding tracks

Cultural preservation: The ability to generate music in Sheng and Swahili could help preserve and promote local linguistic culture

Threats

Job displacement: Session musicians, background vocalists, and producers who create generic content are most at risk

Market saturation: Easy music generation could flood platforms with AI-created content

Devaluation: If anyone can generate professional-quality music instantly, what happens to the value of human musicianship?

Copyright gray areas: What happens when AI-generated music sounds similar to existing works?

The Reality Check
Let's be honest: AI isn't replacing Sauti Sol, Nyashinski, or any artist with a unique voice and authentic connection to their audience. But if you're making generic beats for ads, stock music libraries, or background tracks? You should be concerned. The real question is: Will audiences care whether music is AI-generated if it sounds good and serves its purpose?
The Copyright and Ethics Conversation
Google claims Lyria 3 is "designed for original expression, not for mimicking existing artists." If you name a specific artist in your prompt, the system interprets it as "broad creative inspiration" and creates something in a similar style or mood. The company has implemented:

Content filters: Checking outputs against existing works

SynthID watermarking: Making AI-generated content identifiable

Verification tools: Allowing users to check if audio is AI-generated

Reporting mechanisms: Users can report content that violates rights

But here's the uncomfortable truth: Google's competitors Suno and Udio are both facing (or have faced) copyright lawsuits from major music labels. Suno reached a settlement with Warner Music, while Udio settled with Universal Music Group. The music industry is watching AI music generation closely, and the legal landscape remains unsettled.Questions remain:

Was Lyria 3 trained on copyrighted music? (Google hasn't provided full transparency)

Can the "similar style" generation violate an artist's distinctive sound?

Who owns the copyright to AI-generated music?

What happens when AI perfectly recreates a genre pioneered by specific artists?

What's Next?
Google is also rolling out Lyria 3 to YouTube creators globally through the Dream Track feature, allowing Shorts creators to generate custom soundtracks. This move could significantly impact the royalty-free music industry and platforms like Epidemic Sound and Artlist. For now, Lyria 3 remains in beta with limitations. But if Google's pattern with other AI features is any indication, expect rapid improvements, longer track lengths, and more creative control in coming months.
Final Thoughts: Should Artists Be Worried?
After testing Lyria 3, I understand why the music industry is nervous. This isn't a toy. It's a legitimate tool that produces professional-quality results in seconds. The fact that it handled Sheng perfectly on the first try shows how sophisticated these models have become. But here's the nuanced take:AI won't replace artists with authentic voices and emotional depth. What it will do is:

Democratize music creation (good for accessibility)

Disrupt the generic/stock music industry (bad for certain professionals)

Raise serious questions about copyright and fair compensation (complicated for everyone)

Force artists to differentiate themselves through authenticity and human connection (good for art, challenging for artists)

The music industry isn't ending. It's evolving. And like every technological shift before it, some will adapt and thrive, while others will struggle. For Kenyan artists and producers: the time to figure out where you stand in this new landscape is now.
