Twitch chief executive Dan Clancy has told Bloomberg that Grand Theft Auto 6 will get its multiplayer mode next year, the first public hint at a timeline for an online component that Rockstar Games has not discussed. Neither Rockstar nor its parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has confirmed the claim, and Bloomberg described it as something Clancy anticipates rather than an announcement. The single-player game launches on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The comment came as Clancy discussed the effect GTA 6 is expected to have on Twitch, and why other publishers have moved their own release dates away from it. He said Twitch has spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about its plans and about how to involve streamers. Clancy said the platform would see a bump in viewership at launch, followed by "an even bigger one next year" when multiplayer arrives.

Because "next year" covers all of 2027, the window is wide. It could mean a release as early as January, about two months after the single-player launch, or as late as December, roughly 13 months after it. VGC noted that it is unclear whether Clancy was confirming a plan or making an educated guess, though his reference to direct conversations with Rockstar suggests he has some knowledge of the studio's thinking.

What Rockstar and Take-Two have actually said

Take-Two held its annual shareholder meeting on September 17, and the company gave no date for any GTA 6 multiplayer mode. Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick told shareholders that GTA 6 is launching as a single-player experience on two major platforms, so there is "no recurrent consumer spending anticipated" from this launch, according to Inven Global. Recurrent consumer spending covers virtual currency, add-on content and other in-game purchases made after the initial sale.

Zelnick also said Take-Two will keep supporting GTA Online, the multiplayer mode tied to GTA 5, describing it as a "robust business," according to Notebookcheck. That outlet added a clarification: his wording referred to GTA 5 Online and did not mention GTA 6. Techtroduce made a similar point, saying the shareholder comments confirm continued support for the existing mode without establishing when, or in what form, a successor would appear.

Notebookcheck also referred to rumours that a GTA 6 multiplayer mode could arrive one to two years after launch. The outlet did not attribute those rumours to a named source, and they conflict with Clancy's 2027 expectation. Zelnick said PC is becoming "more and more important" to Take-Two over time, but no PC version of GTA 6 has been announced.

PC Gamer and Kotaku both said they had contacted Rockstar for comment on Clancy's remarks. None of the coverage reviewed for this report included a Rockstar response.

A different launch pattern from GTA 5

The timeline matters because of precedent. GTA 5 launched on September 17, 2013, as a single-player game, and GTA Online followed about two weeks later, according to VGC. That short gap let Rockstar move players from the campaign into the multiplayer economy almost immediately.

If Clancy's expectation holds, GTA 6 would separate the two by months rather than weeks. Take-Two has already said publicly that GTA 6 itself will not carry recurrent spending at launch, which makes the gap a structural choice and not just a scheduling detail.

Why the online mode carries the money

GTA Online has remained one of Take-Two's largest revenue lines for more than a decade. In fiscal 2026, which ended March 31, Take-Two reported net bookings of $6.72 billion, up 19%. Recurrent consumer spending made up 78% of net bookings and grew 17%, according to the company's results. Take-Two listed GTA Online and GTA V among the largest contributors to net bookings for the year. Trade coverage of the results reported that GTA Online recurrent spending rose 5% in the fourth quarter.

For fiscal 2027, Take-Two has guided to net bookings of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion, with GTA 6 as the main driver. Analysts have tied part of that outlook to the online side. In a June 23 research note reported by TheStreet, Bank of America raised its fiscal 2028 GTA Online bookings estimate to $2.2 billion, assuming $60 in annual bookings per monthly active user. That figure is an analyst estimate and not company guidance.

Why Twitch is paying attention

Twitch, which is owned by Amazon, expects the launch to pull in viewers. Clancy said GTA 6 will meaningfully lift overall viewership, including returning users who have not logged on in a long time, but said he could not estimate by how much. Kotaku reported that he expects the game to hold gamers' attention until at least January.

Streamers are already positioning themselves. TweakTown reported that IShowSpeed plans to move to New Zealand to play GTA 6 at midnight local time, about 18 hours ahead of the US release.

The remarks also touched on scheduling. VGC reported that Clancy was discussing publishers who are avoiding GTA 6 by releasing games in October or holding them back until the launch period cools. He suggested those waiting may have to wait longer than expected, because a multiplayer launch would give Rockstar's game another surge in attention. Men's Journal reported that multiple companies planning 2026 releases have shifted their dates because of GTA 6.

What it means for players in Kenya and East Africa

GTA 6 is a console title at launch, and that shapes who can play it in the region. Nairobi retail shops lists the PS5 Slim Disc Edition at KSh 94,999 and the Digital Edition at KSh 80,000, prices it shows excluding VAT and which are subject to change. Those are retailer listings and not Sony's official pricing.

The gap between console spending and mobile use is visible in Take-Two's own numbers. Mobile accounted for 50% of the company's fiscal 2026 revenue, and consoles for 11%. Zelnick told GamesIndustry.biz that the mobile share lines up with territories such as India and Africa, where smartphones dominate over PCs and consoles, according to WN Hub's report of the interview. Market research firm Mordor Intelligence puts Africa's gaming market at $2.29 billion in 2026 and says more than 95% of the continent's 349 million gamers play on mobile. The firm also forecasts Kenya as the fastest-growing country market in Africa, at a 12.96% compound annual growth rate through 2031. Those are research estimates and not official statistics.

Pre-orders are already being taken locally. The listings differ on details, including whether a physical copy will be sold, and none of them are official Rockstar pricing. Level Up's page warns that PlayStation and Xbox wallet codes are region-locked and non-refundable, so buyers need to match the code to the country of their console account.

The multiplayer question adds a recurring cost on top of the purchase price. On PS5 and Xbox, online play generally requires a paid platform subscription, separate from the price of the game. Whether GTA 6 multiplayer would sit behind that requirement, and what Rockstar would charge for it, has not been disclosed.

For now, the only firm date is November 19 for the single-player game. Rockstar and Take-Two have said what GTA 6 will not include at launch, and Clancy's comment remains the only public indication of when the online half might follow.
